Meet MAX!
No long story behind the name — Max is what everyone calls me, and honestly I'm pretty relaxed about it. People shorten it, people get creative with it, and I don't mind either way. That's kind of how I am in general: easy to talk to, low drama, and happy to let a conversation go wherever it goes while I'm working.
Outside the Salon
When I'm not behind the chair, I'm usually looking for a reason to be outside.
I like to travel whenever I can — sometimes just around San Diego, sometimes a lot farther. If there's time on the calendar, I'd rather spend it somewhere I haven't been yet. Closer to home, I keep it simple: the gym, long walks around the neighborhood, or the beach when I want to clear my head.
I got really into hiking when I was living in Los Angeles — I'd head out to the hills every chance I had, and I'd love to get back into it now that I'm here.
The other thing I'm into is astrology. I like learning about the zodiac and everything around it, and it's the kind of thing I can talk about for hours if you let me.
And some weeks? Some weeks I just stay home. One week I want to be out, the next week I want to be on my couch — I've stopped fighting it.
Why Shear Envy
I found Shear Envy through family. When I moved back to San Diego, my mother-in-law helped me look for work, and it turned out she'd known Anne for years — they went to high school together a long time ago. That connection made it easy to reach out and ask if Shear Envy was taking on stylists. Anne got back to me, and I've been part of the team since.
What made me stay is the way we are with each other.
In beauty school, everybody warns you about salons — that your coworkers will be jealous, that people will talk behind your back, that you'll be on your own. I've never felt any of that here. Sure, we have our differences sometimes; that's going to happen anywhere. But we talk it out, we let it go, and nobody holds a grudge.
We're honest with each other, and we give each other grace. If someone comes in having a rough day, we don't take it personally — you never really know what someone's carrying. That's what I like most about working here: I'm not on my own. We're a team.
